What is Journal Citation Report?

What is Journal Citation Report?

The Journal Citation Reports (JCR) contains a fully transparent dataset for the Journal Impact Factor calculation. It demonstrates the article and citation components of a journal’s impact. It provides you with transparent, publisher-neutral data and statistics.

JCR contains citation-based performance metrics at the article and the journal level; it shows the network of references representing the journal’s voice in the global scholarly dialogue; furthermore, it also highlights the institutional and international players who are part of the journal’s community. It integrates with the Web of Science. It contains the data that will help you understand the essential components and the impact of each journal.

How does it help?

Mostly it is Publishers, librarians, researchers and others who depend on the JCR to track specific titles, inform the maintenance of journal collections, and identify the best-fit journals to publish. It is a connection of citations created by the research community through vast publisher-independent data, metrics and analysis of the world’s most impactful journals.

Made with an accurate selection of top journals and the development of new measures, the JCR remains an essential resource. A global team of experts continuously evaluate and select the collections of journals, books and conference proceedings covered in the Web of Science Core Collection to ensure accuracy in evaluating journal impact.

2019 Journal Citation Reports

On June 20, the Web of Science Group, a Clarivate Analytics company, released the 2019 Journal Citation Reports (JCR).

  • Firstly, it covered 11,877 journals, including 283 titles new to the JCR – 108 of them fully open access.
  • Further, 81 countries representing research and scholarship
  • In 90% of the 236 research categories, there was an increase in the aggregate journal impact factor.
  • Furthermore, after an investigation, 17 journals were suppressed from the 2019 JCR. This is to ensure the data’s integrity as they were harming the citation policies.

Journals that also meet the sciences and social sciences criteria enter the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) or Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). These journals are then eligible for inclusion in the Journal Citation Reports and will receive a Journal Impact Factor.

The impact factor compares different journals within a particular field—the Web of Science indexes more than 11,500 science and social science journals. Journal impact factors help evaluate the merit of individual articles and individual researchers.

It is a scientometric index calculated by Clarivate that reflects the yearly average number of citations of articles published in the last two years in a given journal.
